Christmas Presence
All alone on Christmas eve
Waiting for the snow
Basking in the gentle warmth, of the fires glow
Staring at an unlit tree
With no presents on the floor
Hoping for a Christmas call
Or a knock upon the door
Thinking of the days gone by
With friends and family round
There’s nothing here, no light, no fun
Nor hardly any sound
The TV’s on, but I don’t watch
It’s just a background noise
I drink some tea and watch the clock
Hope the grand kids like their toys
No chestnuts roasting on the fire
No Champagne on the go
They belong in Christmas past
So very long ago
I sit and watch the embers, as they fall into the grate
Thinking of all the riches that used to fill my plate
Not the turkey, not the sprouts not the expensive wine
The greatest gift we give to all
Our house, our love, our time.
