Web of Lies

The headlines keep on coming
Each much bigger than the last
We haven’t got a minute
The internet is moving fast

The world is coming to an end, if Russia doesn’t bend
Prince Harry is in trouble, his family is befuddled
And Boris is returning once again

All the writers have made pacts
No one cares about the facts
Just tell a tale, and try to cause some bother
If someone says we’re wrong
We apologise, move on
And tomorrow we can blast them with another

The truth is out there somewhere
But it’s not within the news
It’s a political agenda, where all can air their views
There’s no editorial marque
They just do it for a lark
To see who can score the biggest scare

We can’t just have the flu, we have to have the Kraken
We can’t just have some snow, it becomes an evil troll
Football isn’t just a game, it now is life or death
And we hardly have the time at all, to catch our bated breath

They’re breeding cats with dogs
We’re all going to lose our jobs
But paradise is just a flight away
When is it going to end
The omens they portend
They are saying sometime maybe in early May

The NHS is a big mess, which no one will address
And the Politicians’ they all have gone astray
Hiding safely under blankets from the storm

A pop-up springs to life
The winter sales are on
Buy them NOW because they’re very nearly gone
Maybe it’s a scam,
I’m sure I read about it somewhere,
yesterday

The price of powers going up, but maybe coming down
I’ll just pay it with a frown, in my dressing gown
As the power companies’ profits rise and soar

Other stories break
They may be real, they maybe fake
It really doesn’t matter anymore

The internet is such a beast
And now it’s time to feast
To get our thrills, and keep up with the pace
But remember as you feed,
servicing your greed
That this ‘reality’ is now the Human race.

“Web of Lies” is a sharp and insightful commentary on the modern media landscape and our consumption of news. The poem cleverly captures the relentless nature of today’s headlines, from political drama to sensationalized stories, highlighting how truth becomes increasingly elusive in our fast-paced digital world. Through its rhythmic verses and pointed observations, it showcases how news has transformed into a spectacle more focused on generating clicks and controversy than delivering facts, with stories ranging from health scares to economic doom all vying for our attention.

“Daftness and Other Afflictions” is a delightful collection of poems by Peter J. Watson, a Yorkshire-based poet with a keen eye for life’s absurdities and a warm, authentic voice. Writing from Scarborough, Watson crafts verses that range from whimsical observations to deeper reflections on modern life, all delivered with a distinctly Yorkshire perspective. His poetry combines wit, wisdom, and a touch of the absurd, making readers laugh, think, and sometimes both at once. If you enjoy poetry that speaks to everyday experiences while offering a fresh, often humorous take on life, this collection is well worth exploring.

    • Our website was set up with minimal investment. I have some technical skill but far from what I would call professional. Youtube is your friend here – I watched a load of videos for several weeks before attempting to build it.

I’ll put together a blog article outlining what we did to build the website with links to the youtube channels – i’ll try to get it published next week – which might be helpful for you and others.

Thank you for the feedback. ❤️
