We’re going out tonight
To teach our kids new tricks
We’ll get all dressed up in disguise
Go out and get our kicks
Go and visit all the old folk
Give them a big surprise
We’ll send the kids up all alone
To knock upon their door
We’ll stay back within the shadows
If they create a rumpus
We’ll throw our slings and arrows
It really is such fun
To go out and scare the old folk
Just ask for sweets with menaces
Don’t you get the joke
We know that you live all alone
On a pension with little money
Come on, cough up, we’re sure you can
Spare something for our little honeys
It’s just good fun
Nothing like the Mafia
Come on pay up
Can’t you see that we’re all laughing
We’ve got some rotten eggs, and
Flour in a bag
Come on cough up
You nasty, rancid hag
If you don’t play
It won’t be very nice
We’ll put you on the ducking stool
And dip you once or twice
Come on, pay up
We’ve given you your chance
We will be back next year
To get our new advance
BUT,
If we see you on the street
We’ll pass without a glance
Just another old and lonely
Whose life is past their prime
We’re never going to say hello
We never have the time
Don’t speak to our children
Don’t give them any sweets
We know you’re trying to trick them
Give them a nasty little treat
They mustn’t speak to strangers
We tell them all the time
Unless they knock upon your door
With menace on their mind.

I really don’t like Trick or Treat on Halloween.
Teaches kids ALL the wrong values.
Sweeties with Menacies
“Sweeties with Menacies” is a thought-provoking poem that takes a critical look at the tradition of trick-or-treating. With a touch of dark humor, it explores how this seemingly innocent custom can sometimes feel intrusive or even threatening, especially to older or more vulnerable members of the community. The poem cleverly flips the perspective, presenting the trick-or-treaters as the menacing ones, highlighting the potential downsides of this Halloween tradition.
This poem is part of Peter J. Watson’s collection “Daftness and Other Afflictions,” a book that showcases the author’s unique voice and perspective on life’s quirks and challenges. Watson’s poetry often blends whimsy with deeper social commentary, inviting readers to see familiar situations in a new light. If you enjoy poetry that makes you both chuckle and ponder, this book might be right up your alley. Why not give it a try and discover more of Watson’s insightful verses?
