By Lillian Bradbury
We are given life, we survive, we are protected.
A region of gasses and vapours enclosed
Yet moving freely around our earth
They show a celestial sphere of bodies, luminous in the night sky.
A waxing moon reveals the outline of hills silhouetted as light fades.
And then charcoal clouds scud across, blocking out the starlight
The heavens hidden in a raven canopy.
At the awakening of the day the vastness is revealed
In a slow mottling of colours.
Through haze and mist a gentle breath reveals
A marbled patchwork still veiled and shrouded
Until a delicate blush appears on the horizon
And a pale glow rises as warm rays litter the earth.
Gauze and chiffon flurries show themselves
Then float and melt away leaving a cornflower hue
Now filled with marshmallow clouds.
As the golden sun rises it paints a mosaic, a nuance
Of rose, amethyst and mellow primrose veined with cobalt.
Ripples of white ribbons appear then melt and fade
As luminous silver-tipped clouds gather and cast shadows.
A kaleidoscope of sulphur and pewter darkens the setting sun
The sky jaundiced and bruised, as an arc, a spectrum of colours
Warn of a threatening cloudburst.
Violent clashes and flashes of light as lively clouds, charred and grey
Manifest and grizzle as the first raindrops fall.
We are given life… we survive… we are protected.
