Queen’s English

A woman on the radio said anus loud and clear,

In truth she’d said another word that slipped right past my ear.

Her gist was of one’s burden, re-tuned my sense of hearing.

For the onus was on me to listen, her accent less concerning.

This blessed plot has many ways of saying what we mean,

With aitches dropped, or vowels soiled we slide words int’tut’other.

We’ve learnt to text, in shorthand say, to c.u.b4.t.

We’ve mastered rap, majored slang, picked up from one another.

From Geordies down the Essex girls to West Country, Scouse and Brum,

We understand our Queen who’s English sets the standard.

So when she says nace for nice and haice for house,

We understand that, that don’t mean no slum.
