A Protest Song

Down with emoji’s now let’s make it clear
Our speech and our writing will soon disappear.
From grunting and signing…here’s language today
So don’t let emoji’s take all that away.

Down with emoji’s we’ll lose all our skills
When dining on smoothies and swallowing pills.
Paper and pens will be all in the past
Progress? Oh no! The die will be cast.

Down with emoji’s we’re humans be proud
Don’t be like sheep and follow the crowd
We distanced ourselves using language not sign
Don’t chatter like monkeys and swing from a vine.

The Greeks and the Romans left words for our senses
We’ve added ellipsis and idioms and tenses.
Our language has evolved over thousands of years
Take heed of our warning and don’t close your ears.

Why do we need them? I will have my say!
I pity the youth and the young of today
The ‘word’ was inspiring and came from the heart
But then I’m outdated and called an old…PERSON

“A Protest Song” is a witty and insightful poem that cleverly critiques the rise of emoji usage in modern communication. The author humorously warns about the potential loss of language skills as society moves towards simplified digital expressions. Through rhyming verses, the poem highlights how centuries of linguistic evolution risk being replaced by simple pictorial communications, ending with a playful self-censorship that demonstrates both the limitations and absurdity of over-sanitized communication.

This poem is part of “Welcome to my World,” a charming collection by Yorkshire author Lillian Bradbury. Writing from the picturesque town of Pickering, Bradbury weaves together a tapestry of stories and poems that capture both the whimsy and wisdom of everyday life. Her work ranges from thoughtful social commentary to heartwarming tales of local life, making this anthology a delightful read for those who enjoy observant, warm-hearted writing with a dash of Yorkshire charm.
